Andrea Davis Pinkney was born in Washington D.C. in 1963. She was raised in Connecticut. Her father enjoyed telling stories and her mother was a teacher. Pinkney's parents instilled a love for books in their daughter. As a young girl, her parents were very involved in the Civil Rights Movement, and these experiences caused Pinkney to want to become a writer. Later on, her parent's involvement with the Civil Rights Movement gave her a large amount of her inspiration for her children's books. Her goal was to become a writer for magazines. She achieved this goal by attending Syracuse University. She graduated in 1985 with a degree in journalism. Her first job was at Mechanix Illustrated. Later on, she became the senior editor of Essence and did editing for Simon and Schuster and Scholastic. During this time, she met her husband Brian Pinkney. He is a Caldecott winner
